Each year, the construction industry, guided by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), dedicates the first week of March to honoring and promoting the role of women in the construction industry. This year’s Women in Construction Week theme, Keys to the Future, celebrates women’s strength and knowledge and their vital role in shaping the construction industry’s future.

In honor of this year’s Women in Construction week, The Concord Group is sitting down with some of our very own women in construction for a special Q&A. Join us for this as we learn about their construction journeys, their roles at Concord, and their insights about being a woman in this industry.

Q&A with Josie Hastings, Project Manager at The Concord Group

Meet Josie Hastings, Project Manager at The Concord Group. Josie has over eight years of experience in this industry, and she started her career as an intern at Concord. Today, we sat down with Josie and asked her a few questions about her career in construction.

How did you decide on a career in the construction industry?
I had the privilege to intern at the Concord Group right out of high school and throughout college while I majored in Cell and Molecular Biology. I left to pursue a job in the science field, and shortly after, I realized how much I missed working at The Concord Group and ended up coming back. I’m happy I made the switch back and have truly enjoyed taking on this opportunity.

What is your current role, and what does it entail?
I am a Project Manager. I am very proud to say I started as an Intern in 2015 and have progressed to this role. My job entails creating and managing budgets and schedules, attending and participating in design meetings, weekly site visits to monitor construction progress, and everything in between.

What do you like most about your career?
That every day is different. The Clients and Projects I work with are all very unique, which enables me learn new things and that makes my job more fun!

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Seeing the impact on my community. I work on a lot of MPS and County Projects, and being a Milwaukee County Resident, it’s amazing to see Projects I’m managing develop in my neighborhood.

What advice would you give to women who are thinking about a career in construction?
Be confident in everything you do, and do not be afraid to speak up!

What is the best advice you’ve received during your career?
Anything is achievable if you work hard enough.

Do you have any female mentors?
I do not have any female work mentors.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a woman in construction?
I wouldn’t say I’ve come across any challenges that can be attributed to being a woman. I feel I am very respected in my current role across all of my Projects.

Are you involved with any industry-related organizations?

Not at this time.
