Interview with Sidney Mechling

Each year, the construction industry, guided by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), dedicates the first week of March to honoring and promoting the role of women in the construction industry. This year’s Women in Construction Week theme, Keys to the Future, celebrates women’s strength and knowledge and their vital role in shaping the construction industry’s future.

In honor of this year’s Women in Construction week, The Concord Group is sitting down with some of our very own women in construction for a special Q&A. Join us for this as we learn about their construction journeys, their roles at Concord, and their insights about being a woman in this industry.

Q&A with Sidney Mechling, Assistant Project Manager, Technical Services at The Concord Group

Meet Sidney Mechling, Assistant Project Manager, Technical Services at The Concord Group.  Today, we sat down with Sidney and asked her a few questions about her career in construction.

How did you decide on a career in the construction industry?
I began working in the construction industry as a painter for a local construction company during high school and absolutely loved it. I then earned both my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in the environmental sustainability field and came to the realization that I could merge my love for construction and passion for wanting to make a difference in the world together into my career by working at The Concord Group.

What is your current role and what does it entail?
I am an Assistant Project Manager with technical services and currently support environmental consulting, facility condition assessments, commissioning and GIS services.

What do you like most about your career?
A lot of the projects I get to work on allow me to tap into my creative side. I also love the variety of projects I am able to assist with and having the opportunity to work with people who have diverse backgrounds.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Being able to work with such creative and collaborative team members is so rewarding. It is satisfying to brainstorm ideas with each other and then see our ideas come to life and succeed.

What advice would you give to women who are thinking about a career in construction?
Network with other women in the construction field. It is empowering to hear stories from women about their experiences and career journeys and will most likely inspire you to start a career in construction.

What is the best advice you’ve received during your career?
Don’t shy away from challenges because challenges become opportunities to excel and grow.

Do you have any female mentors?
I don’t necessarily have a female mentor in technical services, but I do have a strong support system with women at Concord. We share our experiences and can rely on one another for support.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a woman in construction?
It can be daunting walking into a room and you’re the only woman in a discussion. It is important to remind yourself that you worked hard for a seat at that table and you’re paving the way for more women to be in the industry.
