The Built Environment and Construction sector collectively accounts for about 39% of global carbon emissions, more than any other industry. Moreover, buildings are responsible for 50% of all extracted materials.
In response to this, we have started to offer a scope of Sustainable Management services to assist our clients to better plan, design and operate their facilities from a sustainable focus. In addition, we have partnered with Epsten Group and AEI Consultants, both pioneers for sustainability in the Built Environment, to launch a Sustainability Leadership Council committed to further championing our sustainability efforts, strategies, and innovations.
The shift towards more sustainable construction is more imperative now than ever and as a firm we are committed to being socially and environmentally conscious to ensure a more sustainable future for generations to come.
For a more in-depth look at the future of the construction industry, check out our blog. This is the first of a series of blogs we will release focused on sustainable construction.

The latest Architecture Billings Index (ABI) released by AIA increased to 52 in December from 51 in November continuing the 11 month streak above the 50 mark, indicating continuing strong demand in the market. Interestingly, mixed practice firms in particular are trending at the highest level of billings since April of 2005, in contrast to firms that specialize in either residential, commercial/industrial or institutional which all show an index trending below 50, indicating a drop in demand in those specific sectors.
Other interesting construction cost trends to note as recently reported by AGC include that the producer price index (PPI) for material and service inputs to new nonresidential construction climbed 18% for all of 2021.
The PPI for new nonresidential building construction—a measure of the price that contractors say they would bid to build a fixed set of buildings—increased 13% y/y, the most in the series’ 12-year history. We are likely to see continued increases in construction costs through 2022 as the industry continues to contend with material cost increases, supply chain issues and limited labor availability.
