Q&A with Laura Arboleda, Assistant Project Manager at The Concord Group

Meet Laura Arboleda, Assistant Project Manager at The Concord Group. Today, we sat down with Laura and asked her a few questions about her career in construction.

How did you decide on a career in the construction industry?
When I was growing up in Colombia, my parents had a construction supplies business.

What is your current role and what does it entail?
I’m an Assistant Project Manager, I’m involved in very diverse portfolio of projects supporting the team on any task needed to achieve the milestones of the project. This can include assisting in developing project plans, timelines, and budgets. Coordinating with different teams, subcontractors, vendors, and clients to ensure smooth project execution. Maintaining project documentation, including contracts, change orders, meeting minutes, and progress reports. Assisting in tracking project expenses, reviewing invoices, and monitoring project costs to ensure that they stay within budget. Building and maintaining positive relationships with clients by addressing their concerns, providing updates on project progress, and ensuring that their needs are met.

What do you like most about your career?
I like how each project brings a variety of clients, working with people with different backgrounds and collaborating to make an impact on each project.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The completion of a project is always rewarding, leading to this I can find reward as well in learning new skills on the intricate parts that each project has.

What advice would you give to women who are thinking about a career in construction?
Do your research, ask questions and be confident. Even though it is an industry mainly dominated by men, there is opportunity for women to learn, grow and have a positive impact in our environment.

What is the best advice you’ve received during your career?
Don’t hesitate to ask for what you want and speak up.

Do you have any female mentors?
As a role model, Angela Ahrendts. I find her career fascinating. From a small town in Indiana, Angela stepped up to be Burberry’s CEO from 2006 to 2014 to then become Senior VP of retail at Apple. She has tremendous leadership and innovative skills. She believes that success comes from compassion, humility, ambition, and intuition.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a woman in construction?
Given the stereotype that the construction industry it’s mostly for male individuals, earning respect and a voice could be difficult, but trusting your hard work, experience and knowledge can help minimalize the impact of the stereotype.
