Interview with Jenny DePaolis

Each year, the construction industry, guided by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), dedicates the first week of March to honoring and promoting the role of women in the construction industry. This year’s Women in Construction Week theme, Keys to the Future, celebrates women’s strength and knowledge and their vital role in shaping the construction industry’s future.

In honor of this year’s Women in Construction week, The Concord Group is sitting down with some of our very own women in construction for a special Q&A. Join us for this as we learn about their construction journeys, their roles at Concord, and their insights about being a woman in this industry.

Q&A with Jenny DePaolis, Director of Marketing at The Concord Group

Meet Jenny DePaolis, Director of Marketing at The Concord Group. Today, we sat down with Jenny and asked her a few questions about her career in construction.

How did you decide on a career in the construction industry?
My dad has a construction business and I grew up looking at architectural plans and visiting him on his job sites. I always enjoyed seeing a project from start to finish. I guess that’s why joining an Owner’s Representative firm appealed to me.

What is your current role, and what does it entail?
Director of Marketing. I lead the company’s marketing efforts and am responsible for the firm’s overall marketing program.

What do you like most about your career?
Being creative and working with all staff throughout the firm. I also enjoy being part of project pursuits and the feeling that all the hard work is worth it when we win a project.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
When I work on a proposal, and we get the call/email that we were selected for the project.

What advice would you give to women who are thinking about a career in construction?
Go for it! It’s a lot of fun and rewarding.

What is the best advice you’ve received during your career?
Speak up and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Do you have any female mentors?
I’ve had the privilege of working with a lot of inspiring women, specifically at Concord, and I’m grateful to have a strong support system of women with whom to share experiences.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a woman in construction?
At Concord, I’ve always felt valued and that my voice was heard. However, these challenges exist in the construction field — and I have experienced them in the past. Particularly because I’m in marketing, I’ve had people not value me as much despite the admin and support team being the engine that makes everything go in a firm. As an industry, we’ve come a long way, but we need to do more to ensure women feel empowered and that their work is respected in construction.

Are you involved with any industry-related organizations?
Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) and Professional Women in Construction.
