Interview with Connie Gan

Each year, the construction industry, guided by the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), dedicates the first week of March to honoring and promoting the role of women in the construction industry. This year’s Women in Construction Week theme, Keys to the Future, celebrates women’s strength and knowledge and their vital role in shaping the construction industry’s future.

In honor of this year’s Women in Construction week, The Concord Group is sitting down with some of our very own women in construction for a special Q&A. Join us for this as we learn about their construction journeys, their roles at Concord, and their insights about being a woman in this industry.

Q&A with Connie Gan, Cost Estimator II at The Concord Group

Meet Connie Gan, Cost Estimator II at The Concord Group. Today, we sat down with Connie and asked her a few questions about her career in construction.

How did you decide on a career in the construction industry?
I’ve always been drawn to problem-solving and hands-on work. The construction industry presented a dynamic environment where I could apply both my analytical skills and my love for building tangible things. After exploring various fields, I found that construction offered the perfect balance of challenge and fulfillment.

What is your current role and what does it entail?
My current role is Cost Estimator II. As a cost estimator, I analyze project specifications and blueprints to determine the cost of materials, labor, and equipment needed for construction projects. I work closely with project managers and clients to provide accurate cost estimates and ensure projects stay within budget constraints.

What do you like most about your career?
What I like most about my career in construction is the sense of accomplishment that comes from seeing a project come to life. From the initial planning stages to the final touches, being part of a team that transforms ideas into reality is incredibly rewarding.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is the opportunity to contribute to the built environment and make a lasting impact on communities. Knowing that my work helps create spaces where people live, work, and play brings a sense of pride and fulfillment.

What advice would you give to women who are thinking about a career in construction?
My advice to women considering a career in construction is to embrace your strengths and be confident in your abilities. Don’t be afraid to pursue your passion, even if it means breaking gender stereotypes. Seek out mentors, advocate for yourself, and never underestimate the value of hard work and perseverance.

What is the best advice you’ve received during your career?
The best advice I’ve received during my career is to always stay curious and never stop learning. The construction industry is constantly evolving, so it’s essential to stay informed about new technologies, techniques, and best practices. Embrace every opportunity to expand your knowledge and skill set.

Do you have any female mentors?
Yes, my previous manager is a very influential woman in the construction industry. Her guidance and support have been invaluable in helping me navigate challenges and advance in my career.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a woman in construction?
The biggest challenge I’ve faced as a woman in construction is encountering fewer opportunities for advancement compared to my male counterparts. Despite this challenge, I’ve learned to advocate for myself, demonstrate my capabilities, and break through barriers to achieve my goals.

Are you involved with any industry-related organizations?
No, I am not currently involved with any industry-related organizations, but I am open to exploring opportunities for networking and professional development within the construction industry.
